Friends
So, I've started a Livejournal account because for a lot of LJ sites, if I want to leave a comment then I need an account.  I shall probably neglect the actual 'journal' side of this place almost as much as I shamefully neglect Mental Kipple.  That or I shall find an easy way to crosspost/reproduce via RSS my other writings here.

Or I may just fill it up with random gibberings.

So, lots of people have 'friended' me - I'm still feeling my way around this place, so I have no idea of the etiquette of this place.

So a request from me.

Tell me who you are, let me know what you are doing here, show me a bit of your writing or photography or somesuch.

Entertain and inform me.

Please.

And if there is a photo of you online that you don't mind using, show me it (for I am old and tend to recognise faces rather than names) -

This icon's the real me, albeit with a little eye make up. I read (and enjoy) your blog via the feed at [info]random_reality, so I thought I'd see what you were doing here. Most of my photos haven't made it here yet. They're coming soon (TM).

I'm Lizzie. I have a website here that I use for my more serious writing and dumping my photos on. A bigger picture of me (my icon is the first) is here. I use my LJ mostly for keeping up with other people's goings on and keeping them upto date with mine (which very occasionally includes reviews of books/films/concerts that have impressed me or political rantings when I get especially worked up).

I've been reading your blog since someone else pointed me at it a few years ago; you don't know me from Adam. I'm a bit of a hippy, a bit of a music geek, I live in Tower Hamlets. The pic in this icon is me but it is old. More information available at my LJ userinfo and also at http://ewt.anarres.org.

Hi Tom,

I've been reading your blog since 2005 and am a big fan. I came to a talk you did at the Apple store last summer.

I've 'friended' you so that your public journal entries appear on my friends page but as a side effect you can also read my journal. I'm afraid it isn't very interesting. I mainly use lj as social networking rather than writing which is why I don't count it as a 'blog'.

Hope to see you around,
piqueen

Hi Tom. I'm a long time reader of your blog, and have bought 3 copies of your book so far (one for me, and two for christmas presents). I sort of blog a bit here, but most of my entries are friends only. This is partly because I'm not too keen on work colleagues reading everything, and partly because they are terribly dull.

Hi Tom
I have been reading your blog for a year or so. I am, as for now, an instructor in the Norwegian civil defence. I am sort of an all-rounder: fire, search and rescue, "field" first aid, CPR... My formal responsibility is the SAR part and my personal favourite is the first aid part

You can find my pictures here, and this is me.

Hi,

I've been reading your blog since Dr Crippen first linked to you. I'm an internet geek, a maths student, a London cyclist and a bookworm. My lj is admittedly 90% in-jokes. I'm afraid that my icon is the only photo of me I'll admitt to openly, so another photo would be:

I'm based in the USA, and I've been reading you for a bit now (I've got your feed in my Thunderbird Mail-reader). I did try to post a comment once, but for some reason it wouldn't go through (May be related to the fact that I am on dial-up and hubby and I were both using the "intarnets" at the same time.) As for a pic, I've recently posted a camera phone one last Fri (I went to Va Tech years ago, and Fri was a wear your colors day.) My writings are nothing like yours, especially since I don't have a job at the moment, and not even sure what I "want to be when I grow up" now, but I do use LJ as my blog and letting my family know what's going on. (This is more apparent when I was going through some liver problems [benign tumors] last year.)

Hi! I'm another one of those who you wouldn't know from Adam (or in my case, Eve). I've been reading your blog for about 18 months or so and am not only fascinated by the window it provides onto a world that is quite alien to me, but also awed by what you do. I see that two of my friends, both of whom I know from my involvement in the UK science fiction scene have already friended you - small world :-) The userpic attached to this is the only one I have on lj - it was taken on my wedding day in 1996. I mostly use my lj to keep up with friends, handy when some of them are on different continents!

You don't know me. I read your blog and have been for several months. I don't have any pics of me online. I friended you because I want to see your posts on my friends page, of course as people have said you can now view my lj, but I rarely post anything you'd be interested in. My writing is in a seperate journal and locked for only a very small group or on my main journal and almost certainly not to your taste :) You're welcome to look but don't say I didn't warn you.

I also make a lot of userpics so if you get yourself addicted to lj (and about 18 months ago I was saying I'd never get a lj, now I have two, run some comms and have a large friends list of people I check up on regularly so beware, it happens) then feel free to rummage through my scrapbook and snag yourself some icons.

Hi; I'm Arkady - another long-time reader, and occasional commenter on your blog. I'm the former District Line Controller, who refers to the Fire Brigade as "the water fairies" (which you may or may not remember).

This icon is one of the more recent shots of me - though it's nearly a year old now. As for what I do, mostly these days I'm an artist and musician - far cry from my London Underground days. I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant with my third child - but don't worry, it's a planned homebirth so no risk of being one of your "maternataxi" cases! ;-)

I'm a former EMT from the States that was introduced to your writing through BookCrossing.com, when I was offered an opportunity to read this copy of your book. I then discovered the syndicated feed of you blog here on LJ ([info]random_reality), and have been reading regularly since.

My blog is random stuff from my life or thoughts about stuff in the news. I can understand if you're not interested in reading it (I'm about to start writing a series of entries about my weekend in Charleston, SC at the BookCrossing Convention, which was an absolute riot). I simply added this LJ to my friends list so I can more easily read what (if anything) you write here.

As for a sample of my writing, you could look at my review of your book in the link above (its the third entry down the page). My photos are posted at http://www.flickr.com/photos/resqgeek and include this fairly recent one of me and my wife.

Hi, Tom1 I'm Sola; i mostly read your posts through the feed here, so there's absolutely no way you'd know me. I live in NYC and do closed captioning for a living, with a bit of sneaky bookbinding and sewing on the side. Don't tell anyone.

No recent pictures worth a damn, sadly. I'm also a former pre-med student now thinking of becoming an embalmer, and have enjoyed your blogging immensely. No matter how dark it may get, it is still full of life, life, human life.

Hello, I've been reading the full blog for quite a while now, and I switched to the RSS feed here a couple of months ago. I friended you cos I like reading your work, and I wondered what you might say here that was different...

I try to keep anonymous on the net 'cos I'm trying to get the courage up to blog about work, but I'm not anyone you would know anyway.

Hey there, Tom! My name is Ericka and I've been reading your blog for well over two months now (finally finished all the back blog two days ago!). It's great reading and thank you for being the brilliant writer that you are. I always want to comment, but rather feel the little I'd have to say doesn't 'measure up' (guess I'm being blog shy) so I haven't yet!

But, I'm a real livejournal girl, so here's a comment! I have my Honours Bachelors in Drama from the University of Toronto and I'm currently just settling back into my home city of Pittsburgh after half a year of teaching Theatre in Hong Kong. I run a small theatre company called Absinthe Minded Theatre out of an artist's colony in an old Brewery, and I work part time as a waitress to make certain I do vaguely important things like paying rent and eating on occasion. This is my own writing, just a boring old live journal, but it's mine. There's lots of interesting stuff in there about Asia. Anyway, thanks again for writing and it's nice to finally comment upon you!

Programmer!
You'll find a lot of people on LJ don't necessarily have photos of themselves as userpics. But true anonymity is hard to do - it's easy enough to work out what my reallife name is, where I live etc by a bit of light Googling.

I read your blog via the LJ feed. One of the main benefits of friending someone on LJ is that you get their posts on your friends list so you can see when people post.

I'm another reader of your blog, perhaps for the last 18 months. I bought a copy of your book for my mum!

Anyway, I graduated from Southampton university with a computer science degree last summer, and now I'm doing a doctorate in the same. My website is here, and real photos of me are on Facebook. (I've just this moment clicked to add you as a friend on there; feel free to decline if you'd rather keep Facebook for, y'know, real people. Not like us fake internet people!)

Aside from my geekery? I adore writing (fantasy novels especially), though I don't find much time for it. I think it's probably best if I don't post a novel here, though ;)

Hello! I discovered the existence of your blog a while ago because of a news article somewhere on the internet (either one of the major UK broadsheets or the BBC site, but I forget) about the increase in bloggers who were getting book contracts out of their writings. Read your blog, then went and bought Blood, Sweat and Tea and read it to keep myself calm over Christmas ;-) Got fed up with constantly forgetting to check your blog since I basically only use LJ for blogging, and then found this RSS feed for the blog: http://syndicated.livejournal.com/random_reality/profile which has made things a lot easier since.

Me? I'm interested in health protection from the preventing-infectious-diseases side of things. My blog rarely mentions my work though (and if so usually more about random stuff than actually what we do), the rest of the time it's bunches of random links, random thoughts, conversations with friends and occasionally rambling about books I'm reading/crafting projects I'm working on/things I saw at the cinema/etc.

Glad to see you finally coming over to the LJ side of the force ;-)
